Adults-only or family resort: how to choose

The label tells you who's allowed in, not what the vibe will be. An adults-only resort can be a quiet retreat or a 24-hour party. Here's how to tell them apart.

Adults-only resorts

Usually 18+ (some allow 16+). Expect quieter pools, more couples, more evening entertainment aimed at adults and often better restaurants for the price.

But "adults-only" ranges widely:

  • Party resorts have DJs at the pool, swim-up bars and a younger crowd. Great for groups of friends.
  • Romantic or quiet resorts have adults-only pools, spa focus and calm evenings. Great for honeymoons.

Read reviews for words like "lively", "loud music" or "peaceful" to find out which kind you're booking.

Family resorts

Look for:

  • A kids' club with set ages and hours (and whether babies and toddlers are accepted)
  • A splash pad or waterpark, and a shallow pool
  • Family rooms or connecting rooms
  • A calm, swimmable beach
  • Child pricing: under-2s are often free, and many resorts discount or include young children

"Couples & families" resorts

Many big resorts welcome everyone and separate areas by pool. These can work well for multi-generation trips. Check if there's an adults-only pool or section.
